Skins
Skins is a TV series which aired between 2007-2013. The show was about groups of teenagers age 16-18 in Bristol England, figuring out their place in life and dealing with serious issues that many teenagers across the world deal with. Jamie Brittain came up with the idea of Skins based on a short story he wrote when he was 15 and was later joined in writing each episode by Ed Hime and Bryan Elsley. Skins is well known for delving into such controversial subjects as substance abuse, sexuality, teenage pregnancy, personality and eating disorders, and mental illness. While this is questionable for some people, it has helped bring to light the issues many people go through and has shown teenagers that they are not alone. You can now find Skins on Netflix or Channel 4 on demand as the episodes don't air on TV anymore.
Throughout the six years of skins, three generations were created and loved. Each generation got two series as the show was following them through the though years at sixth form. Skins is unique in its casting of amateur actors which are all races, sizes and believe in all different religions. This helps the audience relate to them and connect more with the show. This is why it is so popular and has grown such a fan-base even though its been four years since Skins has stopped airing.
I love Skins because it faces the real issues that teenagers can go through and the character developments throughout the episodes shows that we can change for better or for the worst. I also love that they don't cast older actors trying to be teenagers like many american movies and shows do. Its refreshing to see and it helps me relate to the characters more, therefore I enjoy watching it. Another reason I love skins is that the episodes can teach me about friendships or relationships or mental health issues of others.
Defiantly check out Skins on Netflix or Channel 4 demand because it can teach you about the struggles of teenagers growing up and is real about it. It also, for me, can help you feel that you are not alone with anything you are going through. Also each episode is shot amazing and written even better. Many people believe Generation one is the best as it has a nostalgic feel to both seasons and the friendship group are much closer than generation two and three. However don't let that effect your opinion and check it out for yourself.
